6 Questions to Ask your Pet Sitter

It can be weird asking a stranger to stay in your home with your pet(s) while you are away. Having been in-home pet sitting for 4 years now, I have become accustomed to it, yet can understand why many owners are hesitant. Here are a few of the most common questions I receive when speak to new clients:

Can you provide references? My answer is always - of course! I have many satisfied clients willing to speak on my behalf and I encourage you to speak to them. I want you to have peace of mind while away.

How would you handle an emergency? This is an especially important question and one I do not take lightly. Vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite and/or thirst are all obvious signs that need to be addressed. Also, with my experience at a zoo, vet hospital, and handling many sick/ill animals, I am capable of noticing small changes that could indicate something is wrong. Drinking excess water, excess salivation, pain in the abdomen, and pale gums are all symptoms that could mean something is wrong. I ask for veterinary information for your animals before you leave and would call them immediately if I see the need. I also know the locations of 2 emergency hospitals in the area I would take the pet to if needed. You would be informed immediately of the situation and updates throughout the day/evening. You can trust my judgement when it comes to pet emergencies.

Will you send me photos during your stay? Of course!! My phone is full to the brim with all of my pet friends and I usually send at least one photo a day or multiple depending. I also send text updates during my stay.

What are your rates and what is included? My rates are pretty reasonable. For 1 dog stay it is a base rate of $30/night. For a 2 dog stay it is $30 + $10 for additional dog = $40/night and so forth for more dogs. There are some holiday rates that coincide with very busy pet sitting times and will be known to owner prior. For cat stays the fee is $20/night no matter the number of cats. Included in these rates are all of the walks, play times, and house tidying up. I come into you home and keep your pets on their regular routine; they are my main priority! I do have a full time job, so the pets must be able to be left alone for an entire shift.

Should we stock the fridge before leaving or will you bring your own food? I always appreciate this question because not everyone considers it! I usually do my own grocery shopping for things specific to my diet, but most clients allow me free reign to their kitchen, which I appreciate. So my answer is - it is the owner's preference what they would like to do. I am more than happy to make a shopping list prior to the stay for what I will eat, but it is not expected!

PS: I love coffee

Should we tip you? If so, how much? As with any service, a monetary tip can come into question. While again it is not expected for myself, most clients do end up leaving extra than what I charge. Most of the time it is 20% of total bill, or at minimum an extra night. This is always appreciated! I usually express my gratitude with a custom pet portrait or paw print painting.
